Aero / STT
The big challenge for wheel engineers is to reduce weight while maintaining aerodynamics. Typically these design elements are not available in a sub $1k wheel. Luckily, we already made the fastest wheel in the world and translated some of these into the S4.
Using Mercury's Seamless Transition Technology (STT), we;ve integrated the brake strip with the rest of the rim in order to eliminate any obstructions to wind flow and reduce drag-causing turbulence. The result is a wheel that shares the aerodynamics of a deep dish or solid disc, while being much lighter. As a result, the S4 is Mercury's most popular wheel by far.
Spokes + Hub A professional wheel builder will build your wheel by hand. The S4s come with Sapim's indefatigable Race spokes and Mercury's custom hubs. We've found this combination, particularly our low friction sealed-bearing hub, brings an engagement that's as close to immediate as anything we've seen on the market.
The front hub has an extra-wide 70 millimeter flange for reduced flex under hard efforts and confident stability at speed. Both hubs have an oversized axle that reduces to accommodate a traditional quick release and two and four oversized bearings in the front and back, respectively.
The S4's construction uses Mercury's Dual Carbon Layer Process, or DLP. DLP blends high and mid-moduli carbon fibers to tease out the best balance between the lightweight and stiffness of the former and the fatigue-resistance and durability of the latter. DLP also involves the incorporation of basalt fibers in the brake track to reduce heat build-up and increase stopping power.
This increased stopping power goes a long way toward addressing the poor braking that is one of the most common critiques of carbon wheels.

Whether you are a serious XC racer, a gravel grinder or just prefer the classic ride characteristics of a skinnier rim and traditional width tire, this wheelset is right up your alley. They can pick their way up a technical rock stairset as confidently as a Nepalese mountain goat, rip downhill, and corner with the precision of a surgeons scalpel.
Two acronyms that you will get used to hearing with this wheelset will be - K.O.M., and P.R.! Our G3 wheels are all about efficiency, and getting every last watt from your legs transferred to the trail. The rim is a solid 30mm wide, and 24mm deep providing a stiff, responsive, yet forgiving ride. Our hand built wheels are laced two-cross with Sapim Double butted spokes, and alloy nipples to trim weight, all centered around our sealed-bearing, Mercury designed hubs that can convert from thru axle to QR easily so you can use it on your whole fleet of bikes, regardless of drop out standards. The set comes in at a respectable 1,644g. Which is only about 100g heavier than the competitions full carbon XC options, at about half the price.
They're also available in two sizes - 700c (29") or 650b (27.5") to help fit a multitude of applications and/or conversions.

We utilized Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to optimize the strength to weight ratio, lateral stiffness and durability.
We laser etch the Mercury logo on the rim to keep your wheels looking as good as the first day you mount them! We all know that keeping your wheels looking good is always a battle. Between road grime, rock chips and mud wreaking havoc, the last thing you should worry about is that vinyl decal falling off.
Our hubs boast wider flanges creating additional lateral stiffness, the axle has been optimized to lower the weight without compromising performance and 6 sealed cartridge bearings.
